I’m Amelia Carruthers, an experienced private tutor and professional writer. I provide personalised GCSE and A Level English Language and Literature tuition, online and in person in Stratford-upon-Avon and parts of Warwickshire.

Every lesson is planned and taught by me. Whether a student is working towards a secure pass, aiming for the highest grades or finding that conventional teaching does not suit the way they learn, tuition begins with the individual.

In online English lessons, students can type directly, write by hand and share their work on screen, depending on which method suits them best.

Online tuition also gives families access to the right tutor without being limited by location. I currently work with students in the UK and internationally, adapting lesson times where practical.

Academic ambition does not mean teaching every student in the same way. It means finding the approach that allows each student to do their best work.

For students aiming for the highest grades

Strong students need more than just extra practice papers. I help them develop greater conceptual depth, use terminology precisely, explore alternative readings and construct arguments that feel genuinely considered rather than rehearsed.

Lessons provide space for discussion and intellectual challenge, remaining closely connected to the demands of the exam.

For neurodivergent students

I regularly work with students who are autistic, have ADHD or dyslexia, or find traditional classrooms difficult to navigate.

There is no single “neurodivergent approach”. One student may benefit from a clear visual structure and reduced clutter; another may need oral rehearsal before writing; another may understand a text deeply but require support with processing speed, planning or working memory.

I adapt the lesson without lowering its academic expectations. The objective is to remove unnecessary barriers while building strategies the student can eventually use independently.

For students whose confidence has fallen

English can be deeply personal. When a student repeatedly hears that their ideas are “not developed enough” or they need to “analyse more” (often without being shown how), it’s easy for them to conclude that they’re simply “not good” at the subject.

Calm, precise explanation and unwavering personal support can change that. We make the problem specific, work on it in manageable stages and celebrate genuine progress as it happens.

Frequently asked questions

Do you teach both GCSE English Language and English Literature?

Yes. I teach GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature, either separately or together. Some students need support across both qualifications, while others have a very specific difficulty, such as creative writing, unseen poetry or analytical essays.

Lessons are shaped around the student’s examination board, set texts, current attainment and individual goals, so we can concentrate on the areas that will make the greatest difference.

Do you teach both A Level English Language and English Literature?

Yes. I offer one-to-one tuition for A Level English Language and A Level English Literature.

At this level, tuition may focus on developing more sophisticated arguments, applying linguistic or literary terminology, improving essay structure, exploring alternative interpretations or approaching coursework with greater confidence. Please include the examination board and current areas of study when enquiring, as A Level courses can vary considerably.

Which examination boards do you cover?

I work directly from each student’s specification, rather than teaching a generic version of GCSE or A Level English. This ensures that our lessons reflect the correct assessment objectives, question formats and course content. I’m always open to new challenges, but in the past I have covered:

Is online English tuition effective?

Yes. English is particularly well suited to online tuition because we can read, annotate, discuss and edit texts together in real time. It’s effective not just in terms of grades, but also in building a student’s wider confidence and self-expression.

Students can write by hand or type, and we can use shared documents to examine extracts, plan essays and improve paragraphs together. Lessons remain live, conversational and highly interactive. They are not simply worksheets completed on screen.

Online tuition can also be helpful for students who feel more comfortable learning in a familiar environment, as well as families who want to find the right tutor without being limited by location.

Do you offer in-person English tuition?

Yes. I offer private English tuition in Stratford-upon-Avon and selected surrounding areas of Warwickshire.

Lessons may take place in the student’s home or at another suitable local location by arrangement. Availability depends on travelling distance and my existing timetable, so please include your postcode when enquiring.

Do you work with students who have autism, ADHD or dyslexia?

Yes. I have particular experience supporting neurodivergent students, including students with autism, ADHD and dyslexia.

There is no single approach that works for every neurodivergent learner. I take time to understand how the individual student processes information, communicates ideas and responds to different kinds of structure. Lessons might include visual planning, oral rehearsal, shorter stages, clearer routines or additional processing time.

The aim is always to make learning more accessible without reducing the level of academic challenge.

Can you help a student who is already doing well?

Absolutely. High-achieving students often benefit from having the time and space to explore ideas beyond what is possible in a busy classroom.

1-1 tuition can help them develop more sophisticated interpretations, refine their written style, use terminology precisely and move beyond formulaic essay structures. For students aiming for grades 8 or 9 at GCSE, or the highest grades at A Level, we can focus on the independence, subtlety and control that distinguish the strongest responses.

When is the best time to begin English tuition?

There is no single perfect time. The most useful starting point is usually when a particular need becomes clear, or you know you’ve found a great tutor.

Some students benefit from beginning in Year 10 or at the start of Year 11, giving us time to build skills gradually. Others need more focused support before mock examinations or during the final months of the course. At A Level, tuition can be valuable whenever there is a gap between the quality of a student’s ideas and what they are currently able to communicate in writing.

If you are unsure whether now is the right time, I am always happy to discuss the situation honestly (or trial just a few lessons) before you make a decision.

How often should my child have English tuition?

Most students have one 60-minute lesson each week, as this allows us to build momentum without making tuition feel overwhelming.

However, the right frequency depends on the student, their goals, your budget and the time available before examinations. Some students need regular weekly support, while others may benefit from a shorter period of focused tuition. Others prefer just a fortnightly check-in.

We can discuss what is likely to be most useful before lessons begin, and review the arrangement as the student progresses.

Will my child be expected to complete work between lessons?

This depends on the student and their existing workload. I may suggest a short piece of writing, some reading or a particular skill to practise, but I do not set additional work simply for the sake of it. I also stress that school work always comes first.

For students who already feel overwhelmed, it may be more helpful to work with material they have been given by school. For others, completing a small, carefully chosen task between lessons can help new skills become more secure.

What progress can we expect from English tuition?

The purpose of tuition is to help a student make meaningful, lasting progress. This may be reflected in higher marks and grades, but it can also be seen in clearer writing, more confident analysis, stronger exam technique and a greater willingness to engage with the subject.

I will always be honest about what I think we can work on and where the greatest opportunities for improvement lie. Although no tutor can know exactly what will happen on examination day, I can provide thoughtful, focused teaching and help each student approach their work with much greater skill and confidence.
